For me identity is about... who am I?

Who are you?

And what is that you’re striving to achieve?

One of the things that I do when I’m working with clients, is we look at identity as a subject as it’s really important. It’s possible to really misunderstand this particular area.

The key thing here is, we all carry an identity, but do we carry it consciously, or do we just go with the flow? If you’re wanting to achieve a particular goal for example, who do you actually need to become in order to achieve that goal?
You might want to look at your identity?

Look at where are you now and are there areas for you to grow individually, to grow personally to enable you to achieve what you need to achieve? Because there are going to be some things that need to be done, and are you able to get those things done now, or do you need to grow first?

But now I’ve taken it a step further, this is from some learning that I’m going to share with you… some learning that I’ve had myself over last summer about my identity. I’ve always realised that as individuals, as business owners, as parents, as whatever other identities that you have, that we wear lots of hats, and these are the hats. For me, I wear lots of hats. I wear the hat of a mum, I wear the hat of a wife, of a daughter, or a sister, I wear the hat of a business owner. I wear the hat as a partner in a business, I also wear the hat as a trustee of a charity. So, there’s lots of different hats that I wear.

Are you aware of how many different hats you wear?

I encourage you to have a look at this because sometimes those identities stop working together, and this is what I’ve come to realise over the summer. Let me give you an example, my identity as a mum, has been in direct conflict with my identity as a business owner over the summer holidays. So why was that? Well it might seem obvious to some of you, that being a parent, having children at home you want to spend time with them, well I certainly do! It’s one of the reasons why I do what I do and why I decided to step away from corporate land several years ago, because I wanted to be home for the summers, I wanted to witness those really important special moments and make magic memories with my kids.

I’m also really career driven, I am also really driven to create an amazing business that serves a fabulous community of business owners globally. But how can you do that together? And I’ve had a struggle over the summer, it’s been a bit of a tug of war with the different identities. The identity of a mum wanting to do things one way, and the identity as a business owner wanting to do things another way. So, either one has ended up sabotaging the other, it’s been really interesting to see. So, I’m curious, have you ever experienced a conflict with the different identities that you have? I’d love to hear about it…
